Help Nohemi Take Back Her Life!

Nohemi’s Story

Fifty-three-year-old Nohemi Quintero Salazar of Holbrook, Arizona, suffers from polychondritis.

Polychondritis, also called relapsing polychondritis, is a rare disease in which cartilage in many areas of the body becomes inflamed. The disease most commonly affects the ears, nose and the airways of the lungs.

Nohemi was diagnosed with polychondritis in February, 2014 after suffering with symptoms for six months. At that time, she underwent a tracheotomy, a surgical procedure where an incision is made into the neck opening a direct airway through an incision in the trachea (windpipe). This hole serves as the site for a tracheal tube. The tube allows Nohemi to breathe without the use of her nose or mouth. Since she does not have insurance, she is not receiving any further treatments.

Nohemi is very saddened by this because she can no longer care for herself or enjoy simple activities like grocery shopping or cleaning her home. There is nothing more important to her than family, especially her grandson. Prior to the onset of her condition, she loved to cook for her family and spend quality time with them. Now she is not able to enjoy simple things that most of us take for granted like taking a walk.
